Maintenance Worker wanted
St. Veronica’s Catholic parish 533 W. Tioga St. Philadelphia, PA 19140
Position Status:
Starting Part -Time, may move to Full Time within a year. Starting 20 hours a week, $17.000.00 annual pay for Part-Time starting pay. Housing may be available depending on the candidate who applies.
Purpose
The Maintenance Worker at St. Veronica’s serves in a way that is consistent with St. Veronica’s mission, values and theology of the Catholic Church. The position includes maintenance oversight of 3 properties, which currently include 7 buildings, inclusive of St. Hugh of Cluny Church property, 145 W. Tioga St., St. Veronica’s Church 533 W. Tioga St. and 632 W. Erie Ave. Convent.
This includes oversight of residences St. Veronica’s church, the Sisters of St. Joseph at St. Hugh of Cluny Church and Sisters of the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin Matara located next to St. Veronica’s Church.
Requirements – valid U.S. workers permit, validated or able to be validated by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia safe environment policies for work in parishes. Ability to pass drug test and free from alcoholism. Experience and skills consistent with job. Own or have access to car and valid driver’s license.
Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Inspect lighting systems for proper operation, replace and keep in order.
2. Basic security-including checking for potential fire issues, abandoned cars, unusual packages, bags, drugs, etc. left on premises and other dangerous situations. Check and maintain security gates.
3. Check all bathroom plumbing systems for proper operation. Simple repairs/replace as needed. Correspondence with outside plumber when needed.
4. Check all kitchen plumbing systems and fixtures. Repair/replace as needed.
5. Check the heating system. Make sure grills and filters are clean, the heaters working properly, general replacements as necessary. Be able to work with heating and plumbing specialists.
6. Check church building structure for any defects and repair immediately if minor work is needed. Otherwise, promptly report any issue to the pastor.
7. Maintain church landscape such as mowing grass regularly, trimming trees of intrusive branches and hedges, watering plants. This can include recruiting and managing volunteers to do the work.
8. Ensure parking lots and grass are free of junk, trash and garbage, including the section between the Church and school at St. Veronica’s.
9. Disposing of trash according to the regular trash collection schedules and laws in correspondence with the maintenance worker at St. Veronica’s Independent Catholic school. Keeping the area for trash clean of rodents and excessive smell that may disturbs the neighbors. Overseeing cleaning St. Veronica’s school after any Church events in the school.
10. Maintain property in accord with insurance policy norms for safety, compliance with fire safety and structural norms for the city and or state.
11. Purchase and oversee purchases at Home Depot or other stores authorized by the pastor for maintenance needs.
12. Maintain special heater pump system at old St. Hugh of Cluny school, security gates, and be able to show the people to potential buyers.
13. Be able to research and work with outside contractors for building repair and maintenance projects.
14. Make sure Church interiors, retreat house and parish hall are regularly cleaned including overseeing volunteers at least monthly cleaning Church interiors. Overseeing cleaning of Church hall weekly during school year and monthly during the summer.
15. Replace if necessary sanctuary candle for the tabernacle at St. Hugh’s and supervise safety of all candles at the Churches.
16. Oversee the work of exterminator for insects and rodents during their monthly visits.
17. Work with the pastor for other maintenance and property safety concerns.
1. Basic home owners skills in carpentry work, plumbing, electrical and landscaping.
2. Must be able to use the basic tools in:
a. Carpentry
b. Electricity
c. Plumbing
d. Landscaping
3. Able to lift 50 lbs. and climb high ladders. Must be safety cautious always.
4. Ability to collaborate and coordinate with church volunteers on special maintenance projects.
Preferred Qualifications
Bilingual Spanish/English.
